In Year 12 students have three different options to cater for the interests and aspirations of individual students.

Students can select from one of the following:

 

  • A – English
  • B – English with Film
  • C – English Literature and writing

 

English

 

Qualification

NCEA Level 2

 

In this course, language, literature and writing will be emphasised. A Shakespeare play, short written texts, and a feature length film will be studied. The internal assessment includes creative writing, formal writing and analysing connections across texts.

English Through Film

The focus of this course is literacy. A novel, short written texts and a feature length film will be studied. The internal assessment includes close reading of a visual text, an essay, creative and formal writing and personal responses to reading.

English Literature and Writing

 

Qualification

NCEA Level 2

 

This a new course that combines English and Writing for Publication. There will be a strong focus on language and literature, as well as creative and media writing.

Students will study a range of literature, including drama, novel, a range of short texts, as well as film. Central to the course are opportunities for students to write creatively in a range of genres, to explore the craft of writing, to develop journalistic skills and to publish their work in a variety of ways. In internal assessment students will develop a portfolio of original writing in a range of genres, create a digital text, explore an area of their own interest in a Special Study, as well as collaboratively create a print publication. English and Media standards will be used in assessment. Workshops with creative writers and journalists will be an integral part of the course.
