Sylvia Jiang’s Piano Success

26 August 2013

Our superstar pianist, Sylvia Jiang, has placed 4th at the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition in Brisbane on August 24.

The 17-year-old also won two major special prizes for the Best Performances of a work of Chopin and Liszt. This is a big achievement for Sylvia, who was the youngest competitor in a very challenging international field of accomplished pianists up to the age of 30.

Sylvia is in Year 13 and also part of the Young Scholars Programme at University of Auckland where she is working towards a Bachelor of Music in Classical Performance. She practices up to 7 hours a day, depending on schoolwork and other commitments. She has been playing with her teacher, Qu Yong, since she was just four years old.

Early this year she placed 2nd at the Wallace National Piano Competition, where she was the youngest and only high school semi-finalist.

The adjudicator of that competition, Michael Houstoun, said Sylvia is “mind-boggling”.

“It is absolutely extraordinary what Sylvia can do. Sylvia has a massive range and the world is her oyster.”
