Senior School
Years 7-10
In Years 7–10, our students build strong foundations, academically, socially and emotionally, developing confidence and skills that prepare them to thrive in their later College years and beyond.
Years 7-10 represent an exciting time of discovery, where students explore their interests and strengths in a supportive environment. Our all-rounded education challenges girls academically while encouraging them to embrace new opportunities in the arts, sports, leadership, and service helping them develop into confident, well balanced young women.

Students begin their Senior School journey in an environment that balances academic excellence with personal growth. These formative years focus on developing core skills, exploring diverse subjects, and building independence within our nurturing community.
From our Homeroom model in Year 7 to the transformative Kahunui experience in Year 10, students progressively develop the confidence, resilience, and academic foundations needed for the senior qualification years.
“At St Cuthbert’s, girls are truly known and celebrated. In these formative Senior School years, we nurture curiosity, character, and confidence – ensuring every student has the courage to explore, the support to grow and the space to be herself. These years lay the foundations for remarkable futures.”
John Payne, Deputy Principal and Head of Senior School

Year 7: Supporting your Daughter’s Transition to her Senior Years
The Homeroom Model: Supporting Growth and Transition

- English and Social Studies (which are two of the Year 7 core subjects) are taught to their class by the dedicated Homeroom Teachers, who truly gets to know each girl.
- Starting in Term 4 from the year prior, new students are carefully buddied with girls who attended our Junior School, ensuring every girl knows at least one other from the start.
- Homeroom groups also have specialist teachers for Mathematics, Science, Technology, Arts, Music, Health and Physical Education and Languages who provide dedicated expertise.

Year 8 Growing Confidence
Year 8 builds on the foundations established in Year 7, as students grow in confidence and begin to take on more responsibility, supported by their Head of Year. In Year 8, students join Year 8 tutor groups with peers from the same year level and benefit from a dedicated Year 8 Year Level Coordinator who is an expert in this developmental stage. Students select foreign language pathways and study E-textiles and Product Design as part of the Technology curriculum. Leadership opportunities emerge as students take on roles within their Tutor Group, Year level and in supporting Year 7 students, continuing to build confidence and self-management skills.
Year 9 Expanding Horizons
Year 9 at St Cuthbert’s is our second largest entry point. Daily Tutor meetings foster friendships and mentoring, while our unique “big sister, little sister” relationships provide invaluable peer role modelling through our Peer Support programme where Year 12 leaders work with Year 9 students. A specially designed Term 1 camp experience helps new girls integrate while promoting team building and resilience. Students also explore a broad range of subject options in language, technology, business studies and the arts.

Year 10 Kahunui
In Year 10 the academic focus shifts toward preparation for their qualification years, while the Kahunui experience provides transformative personal growth. Students spend a month at our Bay of Plenty campus; St Cuthbert’s is the only girls’ school offering a life skills experience on a separate, school-owned campus. Completely unplugged from devices, girls develop character, resilience, confidence and independence as they live in and manage their own houses. Outdoor activities like overnight camping push boundaries, while environmental education through riparian planting and sustainable food practices enriche their learning.

Horizontal Tutor Groups
The Years 7-13 horizontal pastoral structure aligns with best practice in girls’ education. Students are placed in tutor groups with peers from their year group, recognising that students benefit most from pastoral care specifically tailored to their developmental stage and year-level challenges.
