Cherished Traditions
Throughout the year, our community comes together for numerous special events that enrich the St Cuthbert’s experience, from regular chapel services that nurture spiritual growth, to our moving ANZAC commemorations honouring sacrifice and service, to the joyful celebration of St Cuthbert’s Day that connects us to our school’s heritage.

Junior School Celebrations-Snapshot
100 Days at School Celebration
Our youngest students mark their first 100 days of learning by transforming into “centenarians” for the day! Dressed as 100-year-old ladies with grey wigs, spectacles, and walking sticks, they celebrate this milestone with humour and joy, creating memories that last far longer than those first 100 days.
Year 2 Apron Ceremony
As our students prepare to move from Year 2 to Year 3, they participate in a special ceremony where they symbolically set aside the protective aprons of their early school years. This touching transition marks their growth and readiness for new independence as they progress through their educational journey.
Year 6 Graduation
The culmination of Junior School is celebrated with an elegant evening event. Students showcase their talents through music, dance, and performance, wearing beautiful dresses as they mark this significant transition with their families. This memorable celebration honours their achievements before they step into the Senior School.
Prizegivings
Our annual Prize Givings celebrate academic excellence and outstanding achievement and contribution to school life. The Junior School Prize Giving honours our youngest students in a warm, encouraging atmosphere, while the Year 7–10 ceremony recognises growing academic maturity. The Senior Prize Giving for Years 11–13 is our most formal academic celebration, where students receive recognition for subject excellence, special awards for exceptional achievement, and our most prestigious school honours.
Christmas Services
Our beautiful Christingle and Carol Services mark the Christmas season with cherished traditions that bring our community together in celebration.
At the Christingle Service, students carry symbolic oranges adorned with candles, ribbons, and dried fruits create a magical atmosphere of reflection and hope. These services, filled with angelic voices singing beloved carols and contemporary Christmas music, showcase our students’ musical talents while fostering the spirit of giving and gratitude that defines our school community during the festive season.
Junior School Nativity Play
One of the most heartwarming events in our calendar, the Junior School Nativity Play transforms our youngest students into shepherds, angels, wise men, and the holy family as they retell the Christmas story with innocent enthusiasm and natural charm. Complete with costumes, simple but moving musical performances, and often delightfully unexpected moments, this annual tradition captivates parents and staff alike.
For many families, the Junior School Nativity marks the true beginning of their Christmas celebrations and creates precious memories that last long after the final bow.
Senior School Celebrations
Sports Colours & Cultural Honours
Excellence in sports and the arts is celebrated at these prestigious evening events for our Year 9–13 students. Students who have achieved distinction in sports, music, drama, cultural activities, and oratory are recognised alongside their parents at special awards ceremonies that honour their dedication and accomplishments.
School Ball
Our Year 12 and 13 students eagerly anticipate this special evening celebration – a sophisticated social event that has become a beloved tradition in our senior students’ calendar.
Year 13 Farewell Traditions
Leavers’ Service & Bews Bell Ceremony
One of our most poignant traditions sees our graduating class led through the school by bagpipes to Clouston Hall for their formal farewell service. With the Senior School students, staff, and parents in attendance, this emotional ceremony culminates with a powerful haka from our Kapa Haka group, and each graduate ringing the historic Bews Bell – symbolising the completion of their St Cuthbert’s journey as students.
Strawberries & Cream
Year 13 students who have been with us since Year 0/1 are honoured at this special morning tea event, with a parent, celebrating their remarkable 13-year journey through St Cuthbert’s. Students can also invite a teacher who has made a significant impact during their time at school.
Leavers’ Soirée
Hosted by our Parents and Friends Association, this cocktail event is the College’s formal farewell, and brings together Year 13 students and their parents for a sophisticated evening of farewells and celebration.
Old Girls’ Graduation Ball
The final chapter in our students’ school journey, this prestigious event is hosted by our Old Girls Association and formally welcomes our graduates as Alumnae of the College. Attended by Year 13 students, parents, Old Girls, and school leadership, it represents the transition from student to alumna and the beginning of a lifelong connection to St Cuthbert’s.
