Student Leadership at the College
At St Cuthbert’s, we believe leadership isn’t confined to formal titles – it’s a quality every student can embody through their actions and values. From Junior School through to Year 13, our comprehensive approach to student leadership creates multiple pathways for students to develop confidence, initiative, and responsibility.
Junior School
Students begin their leadership journey in our Junior School with opportunities as class representatives, values champions, and project leaders. We also encourage our students from their very earliest years to develop their oracy skills, essential for leadership development.
These experiences lay the foundation for more significant roles as students’ progress through the College. Sports captaincies, service project coordination, peer mentoring, and coaching younger students provide practical leadership experience across all year levels.
Student Voice Through Governance
Our recently launched Student Council represents a significant advancement in our commitment to student voice. With representatives from Years 7-13, this council creates a formal channel for students to communicate directly with the Senior Leadership Team. This ensures student perspectives inform decision-making reinforcing our belief that students should be active participants in shaping their educational experience.
Year 13 Leadership Opportunities
Our formal leadership structure culminates with the election of our Head Girl team, House and College Prefects, and Committee Leaders at the end of Year 12. This democratic process, involving both peer and staff input, recognises students who have demonstrated exceptional character, commitment, and leadership potential.
Committees and Specialised Leadership
Our committee structure provides leadership opportunities across diverse areas of College life for all Year 13 students. The Junior School Committee, Sports Committee, Communications Committee, Service Committee, and others allow students to contribute their talents in specific domains while developing valuable leadership skills. This approach ensures that every student finds a leadership pathway aligned with their interests and strengths.
Leadership Development
Leadership at our College is not simply assigned, it’s intentionally developed. Our leadership programme includes mentoring, and practical experiences that build essential skills like effective communication, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making. We emphasise that leadership is about service to others rather than personal status, encouraging students to use their influence to create positive change within our community and beyond.
