A new era began on Thursday 1 August at St Cuthbert’s as we welcomed new Principal Charlotte Avery with a traditional Maori pōwhiri. This marks the first time St Cuthbert’s has welcomed a new Principal with a pōwhiri.
The kaikaranga (welcoming call) was led by Head of Te Reo Māori, Kataraina Smith with the support of Science Teacher, Emma Smith, current parent Ceillhe Sperath and Old Girl Maire Sands (Worth). Followed by the kaikorero (reply to kaikaranga) by current parent John Griest.
It was a spectacular morning that marked a momentous occasion. The kapa haka rōpū, Kahukura led the waiata and performed a haka pōwhiri with great mana.
Head Girl Anita Iese shares, “It is a testament to the multiculturalism of our beautiful Aotearoa to have the opportunity to welcome Ms Avery as our new principal by both European and Māori customs.
The lyrics of the waiata our staff and students sang at the pōwhiri included a famous Māori proverb.
He aha te mea nui o te ao?
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.
What is the most important thing in the world?
It is the people, it is the people, it is the people.”
Former Old Girl President, Kirsten McKenzie commented, “It was a great honour to be part of the pōwhiri welcoming our new Principal, especially with the angelic voices of the kapa haka group adding to the occasion. I was particularly impressed by Charlotte’s effort in speaking te reo, which made the ceremony even more special.
The arrival of a new Principal can be a daunting time for both students and alumni, with concerns about upholding traditions and connecting with our alumni. However, Charlotte has clearly set those fears aside, and we look forward to a wonderful future with her at the helm of the school, and as the Patron of the St Cuthbert’s College Old Girls’ Association. It was also wonderful to have Old Girl and OGA committee member Maire Sands there to assist with the tikanga of the pōwhiri.”
