St Cuthbert’s College has celebrated an outstanding week of competition at the 2025 AIMS Games, with Year 7 and 8 students achieving remarkable results across thirteen different sports.
The College’s young athletes competed in Badminton, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Orienteering, Rock Climbing, Sailing, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, and Water Polo, bringing home an impressive haul of medals and top placings.
Swimming Excellence
Monica Wang led the charge in the pool with a stunning performance in the 11-year-old age group. She claimed gold in the 200m Breaststroke, silver medals in the 100m Freestyle, 200m Individual Medley, 50m Breaststroke, and 100m Breaststroke, and added a bronze in the 200m Freestyle.
Orienteering Dominance
The College’s orienteering team delivered exceptional results across multiple events. Cheverny Jayasuriya won the Year 8 Sprint, while Thea Maritz placed second in the Year 7 Sprint.
In the demanding Rogaine event, which saw teams running over 6km, St Cuthbert’s students swept the Year 7 podium with first and third placings. Thea Maritz and Francesca Merz took gold, while Holly Beith, Lucy Fenwick, and Zoe Green secured bronze. Year 8 students Angela Baird and Cheverny Jayasuriya dominated their grade, finishing first.
Racquet Sports Success
The squash team brought home top honours, with St Cuthbert’s named top squash school overall. Angelina Chen placed third in the competition, while Julia Chen earned silver.
On the tennis courts, Jocelyn Ke won the girls singles Division 1 Grade, and Sofia Guglielmetti and Elizabeth Huang captured bronze in the girls doubles.

Individual Sport Achievements
In sailing, Amiya Kattera finished second among Year 7 girls and an impressive 15th overall in a combined field of boys and girls from both year groups.
Angela Baird showcased her rhythmic gymnastics prowess, winning gold in the Hoop, bronze in the clubs, and finishing fourth overall in the Level 5 Rhythmic Gymnastics competition.
Winnie Wang claimed the prestigious Stableford Champion title across three rounds of 18 holes at the Te Puke, Tauranga, and Mount Maunganui Golf Courses. The 11-year-old golfer was determined to complete her first year at the week-long tournament with a Stableford gold medal, and she achieved exactly that.
Team Sport Highlights
The Water Polo team delivered a strong tournament performance, finishing fourth overall after narrowly losing the bronze medal match 3-1. The team secured several big wins in the early days of competition and demonstrated fighting spirit throughout.
The Hockey team had an outstanding week in the 7-Aside Girls competition, playing nine games in five days against New Zealand’s top schools. They finished 10th out of 34 teams, narrowly missing the top eight after competitive crossover pool play.
In Netball, St Cuthbert’s competed against 122 teams from across the country, showing determination, teamwork, and school spirit in every match. The girls celebrated important wins and had the memorable experience of playing against Fiji.
The Football team improved on their previous year’s placing while playing technically impressive football throughout the tournament. Notably, they were the only team to score against eventual tournament winners Havelock North during the round robin stage, demonstrating grit and determination in all their games.
A Week to Remember
Beyond the medals and placings, the AIMS Games provided St Cuthbert’s students with invaluable experiences, fostering friendships, creating lasting memories, and instilling a strong sense of pride in representing their school.
