It’s the end of what has been a very busy term in Sport at St Cuthbert’s. Here are some of the recent successes.
Maadi Cup Over the past 9 days our rowers have been down in Twizel attending the annual Maadi Regatta in Twizel. 128 schools attended this event with over 2000 athletes, 26 of those coming from St Cuthberts. We entered 8 events and ended up with 3 A finals and 1 B final. Our finals were raced on Friday 27th March and we secured 2 Gold medals. The first gold medal was won by Emily Young and Zara Blackie in the Girls Under 18 Double Sculls. With 42 crews entered from around the country, Emily and Zara won their heat, quarter final, semi final and the A final, coming home 5 seconds clear of Queen Margaret College from Wellington who secured silver. The second gold medal was won by Zara Blackie in the Girls Under 17 Singles Scull. This event had 55 entries and once again Zara stormed through her heat, quarter final, semi final and the A final. The bonus for winning this A final was that Lazlo sponsored a brand new single scull boat to the A final champion. So Zara has won St Cuthberts College a new boat. We extend a huge thanks to all the parent supporters who attended this event, in particular Cara Christie for being camp mum over such a long week. We were also grateful to have Charlotte Avery in attendance and witness our amazing gold medal races. Our Under 18 Novice 8 crew of Melody Ding, Neve Dunphy, Evie Doell, Isabel Mahon, Charlotte Vincent, Zara Greig-McKay, Isla McGhie and Briar Jacobson with coxswain Linaya Karunatillake made their A final and finished 8th. A fantastic achievement to make the A final in their first season of rowing.Yesterday, as we travelled back to Christchurch airport, Zara Blackie was announced as NZ Junior Triallst. The trials will be held at Lake Karapiro from 12th – 18th April and if successful, will travel to Plovdiv, Bulgaria to contest the World Junior Rowing Championships in August 2026.The rowing season is now complete and all coaches, athletes and parents are on a well deserved break. We thank all our supporters, Charlotte Avery, Liz Howard and the wider school community for being there on our journey.
Volleyball March was a big month for St Cuthbert’s Senior volleyball teams, with our Navy, Green, and White teams finishing their 4 weeks of round robin in the Central Girls’ Volleyball competition on the 5th March, with all teams showing steady improvement and great teamwork under the guidance of Mr Lee, Mr Harry and Mr Johnson. The Navy team then headed to Bruce Pulman Park for the Auckland Championships held on 11–12 March, where the team delivered strong performances against top regional opponents. The same team continued on to St Cuthbert’s first ever North Island Volleyball Championships at Trusts Arena from 25–27 March, where their season wrapped up giving players a final opportunity to show their growth as a team and to enjoy the experience of the event. A huge thank you to our dedicated coaches Mr Lee, Mr Harry, and Mr Johnson for their guidance and support of all the Senior volleyball players throughout the season.
Athletics Congratulations to Scarlett Robb who has just been named in the team to represent New Zealand at the World U20 Track & Field Championships in August in Eugene, Oregon. This is an amazing achievement. Read more here
NISS Athletics Congratulations to all our students that competed at the NISS Athletics Championships on the weekend. The following students achieved some outstanding results -Juliette Goldsimth: 3rd place Intermediate Girls Long Jump, 1st place Intermediate Girls 4x100m relay, 3rd U16 Girls 100m. Rachel Wagener: 2nd place Intermediate Girls 1500m, 1st place U17 Girls 4x400m Relay, 4th U18 Women’s 1500m. Angela Baird: 1st place Open 2000m Race Walk. Scarlett Robb: 3rd Senior Women’s 1500m.
AKSS Orienteering Sprint Series The School Sprint Series concluded with the Auckland Sprint Championships on Sunday, held at Massey University campus and Orewa College. Eighteen St Cuthbert’s students had qualified from regional zone championships. St Cuthbert’s orienteers to medal were: Zara Toes 1st Senior Girls, Sophie Herde 2nd Senior Girls, Sophie Bacchus 2nd Intermediate Girls, Cheverny Jayasuriya 3rd Junior Girls and Thea Maritz 1st Y8 Girls. Notable other placings were Josie Hua 4th Intermediate Girls, Yuhan Zhang 4th Junior Girls, Bea McGregor-Macdonald 5th Y7 Girls and Cindy Wang 6th Y7 Girls. Congratulations to all who participated in the popular School Sprint Series.
Cricket It was a tough season results-wise for our 1st XI Girls Cricket team, but there were plenty of positives to take away. Playing in the Auckland Premier girls’ school competition meant coming up against some very strong sides, with a number of teams featuring top Auckland and NZU18 players, so every game was a great learning experience for our young team. The highlight of the season was a well-earned win over King’s College. The team did enough to avoid relegation and remain in the Premier grade for next season. The resilience, effort, and willingness to keep improving each week has laid a really solid platform to build on moving forward.
Tennis St Cuthbert’s tennis teams 1 and 2 shared equal 5th place at last week’s National School Tennis Team Championships. We were the only New Zealand school with 2 teams of 4 girls as we have so many talented tennis players! Our top senior tennis teams recently finished their term 1 season with the usual strong results. Our Premier grade team finished in 3rd place winning in a set countback after a 3-3 draw against local rivals Diocesan. We ended up with 4th and 6th overall positions with our Blue and Green teams among the 10 teams in the A2 Grade. Congratulations to all of our girls.
NISS Water Polo Championships After an absolute nail-biter of a semi-final that ended 9-9 against Dio—narrowly missing out in a clinical penalty shootout—the girls bounced back in a massive way. They took care of business in the bronze medal match, beating Epsom Premier with an 11-3 win! Special mention to Indi Rose Scholes and Zoe Knight for being named in the Tournament Team! Our Senior A squad also battled it out in the Division 1 event, securing a solid 9th place finish with some huge performances against top-tier opposition.
AKSS Golf Stroke play Championships – Congratulations to Winnie Wang who placed 2nd overall in the Girls Net points competition.
Central Zone and Interzone Swimming Championships
Congratulations to all our year 7 and 8 swimmers who represented the school at the recent CZ and IZ Swimming Champs.
